Because It Still Matters

April 22nd is Earth Day. It is our national holiday to honor our planet and educate and raise awareness that we all have a part in its stewardship. If we want to reap the health benefits of cleaner air and water for ourselves and leave a healthy planet for future generations, then we all need to do our part.

At Body Mind Spirit, we have been doing our part by being a Green Circle Salon.  This means that our technicians go the extra mile to follow protocol so that 85-95% of the waste created in the salon is recycled rather than sent to landfills. Operating since 2009 and staying true to their motto of “Keeping people and the planet beautiful,” Green Circle Salons has so far managed to impressively recycle 11,017,748 pounds of waste from the beauty industry.

Have you ever given any thought to all the clippings that are produced from people’s haircuts?   Did you know that over 63,000 pounds of hair clippings are made daily in the routine running of salons in North America?  And did you know that hair cannot break down in the landfill as it needs air and water to do so?  As part of this effort, these clippings are manufactured into sustainable plastics, commercial insulations, and the booms used in oil spill clean-ups and stormwater filtration.  Green Circle Salon was equally creative in finding solutions to all the metal wastes (highlight/lowlight foils) created, which now become bike frames and auto parts.  Leftover hair color transforms into clean energy instead of being washed down sinks to end up in our rivers, lakes, streams, and drinking water.

History shows us that change happens when enough people get involved in a movement. That is how Earth Day was created. We appreciate your patronage at Body Mind Spirit as we try to do our part by offering healthier products, technicians with artistry, and a nurturing environment.
