Father's Day falls on June 17th this year. It is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday in the month of June. Did you know that it only became a national holiday when the then President Nixon signed it into law in 1972? In the Catholic tradition, Father's Day has been celebrated in Europe on St. Joseph's Day (March 19th) since the Middle Ages. Outside of Catholicism though, Father's Day in this country had a rocky start.
The holiday was first promoted in July 1908 to support the thousand children who were left fatherless by the Mononagh mining disaster. In 1910, Sonara Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington started trying to promote Father's Day. However, it was not until the 1930's when Sonara enlisted the aid of the manufacturers of ties and tobacco pipes that the holiday started gaining national recognition.
For those of us who enjoy being cynical, here's a great opportunity to rant at commercialism. We could decide to shift our thoughts and attitudes to a healthier and mindful direction and see Father's Day for what it is, a great opportunity to celebrate and honor all that our fathers have done for us.
Here are some positive, thoughtful sayings and quotes to help inspire you:
Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a Dad.
It is not flesh and blood, but the heart which makes us fathers and sons.
Nothing makes a woman love a man more, than seeing how much he loves their children.
“If I know what love is, it is because of you.” - Hermann Hesse
